Is There any Difference between Managed and Unmanaged Cloud?

You have probably already encountered the managed cloud (fully managed cloud environment) offer scope on the market. Not so often do you encounter unmanaged cloud which, however, has many undoubtable advantages compared to the fully managed version. And you should know about them because we are talking about efficiency and costs. Let’s look at the fundamental differences.

Cloud security is one of the most debatable topics of today. Is cloud safe or is it dangerous and is guilty of data leaks? This actually depends on several factors (which we have mentioned in our previous article about the influences on cloud security). If we look at the issue with security from the point of view of the level of management, unmanaged cloud is the more secured choice. Why?

We need to look at the basic description of the service. Managed cloud gives the provider full access to your data and content of your virtual environment. If your company runs fully in cloud, the provider has a full access to all the “guts”. In return, the provider takes care of the smooth run of your apps and data flow.

Compared to the managed cloud, unmanaged cloud does not let anyone near your data that does not have an access right from you. And the provider just does not enter which means the security of your data is fully in your hands. And yes, it does mean that your IT team has to manage the application on their own but isn’t it worth it for the higher level of security and control that remains in your hands?

A cloud environment in and of itself should be intuitive for the technicians – it should not be hard to orient in the environment and get to know how to use it. As soon as the cloud becomes managed from the outside – as a managed cloud – this service loses a part of its adaptability because its set up, edits and management depend on a person that is not in-house.

But if you choose unmanaged cloud, all management and operations are in the hands of your IT team. They have to learn how to use the environment but since cloud should be intuitive, they learn fast and also adapt the cloud fast to the needs of your company. And they do not just approximate the adaptability, they go in fully tailored mode as is needed.

It is true that managed cloud offers a wider range of services here. It makes sense since the provider has a full access into your appliactions, he can also offer support with every app that runs in the cloud.

Unmanaged cloud does not provide this level of support because the provider is separated from your applications by a very well constructed wall. You do receive support with the environment management but not with the individual apps.

Aspect/Service Managed Cloud Unmanaged Cloud
Description Cloud environment is fully managed by the provider of the service – he has access to your applications, databases and data Cloud environment is managed by the customer on the application level – the provider does not see inside and does not have access to appliactions, databases or data
Security Higher level of risk given the access of third party (cloud provider) to all company data Security fully in the hands of the customer and third parties do not have access unless the customer wishes that
Flexibility Time delay when editing the environment and implementing any changes Changes appear as soon as your IT team inputs them
Support Resolving issues with the cloud environment and individual apps Resolving issues with the cloud environment

For instance, Cloudpoint works in a way that resource optimization is very simple and your IT guys can change the resources almost immmediately. And we are talking not only about the reserved resources but also about the newly assigned ones to your project – whether computing resources or storage.
