Which reasons do companies have for cloud repatriation?
FINANCES
The public cloud has undoubtedly saved companies investment costs in hardware. As this area of operation was fully in the hands of the provider, the customer did not care about it. But – what was saved on investments was then spent anyway on the features of the service, which should not have been charged at all.
Logically, when I buy a cloud, I pay for the rental of computing resources – processors, memories and disks. But the public cloud demanded fees from its customers to run servers or to transfer data. All the financial benefits actually turned into a pretty big nightmare.
In addition, these items are often listed on the invoices in such a way that you have no chance to find out what the fee was actually paid for. Another advantage flew out the window – transparency.
LICENSING
At first glance, it’s quite a logical decision – when Microsoft provides licenses for operating systems, we go to Azure so that we can have discounted licenses for our virtual servers.
But then came the realization that the licenses are somewhat advantageous, but your entire environment is locked with a provider that simply won’t let you go anywhere else.
BETTER MANAGEMENT
It is certainly more convenient to manage IT facilities online than to run around the server room and pull cables. But he can make that knot just as easily on a physical cable as on your brain.
The public cloud has brought pre-configured sets of virtual servers that do not exactly match specific needs. So you have to settle for the second best option. In addition, you may still be penalized for wanting, for example, faster drives – the faster the drives, the bigger they have to be.

KEEP THE EXISTING SOLUTION
Indeed, your analysis can tell you that a large provider’s public cloud services are the best value for you. It can be from the point of view of already established services that simply cannot be replaced and it would be economically disadvantageous to build everything from scratch somewhere else.
GO TO A HYBRID CLOUD
If you’re thinking of trading public cloud for physical infrastructure, you may not have to sacrifice either. A hybrid cloud is a combination of physical infrastructure and the cloud. So if some of your company’s activities don’t suit the public cloud, keep only what feels good there.
GO TO A MULTICLOUD
As the name suggests – multi-cloud is also an option. If you want to keep something in the public cloud, but want to put something somewhere else, but not on iron, then a possible solution is another kind of cloud service that best covers the remaining requirements.
GO TO A LOCAL PROVIDER
As we mentioned before, the cloud is not like the cloud. The Big Three public cloud is not the only public cloud. Then you have on-premise providers, some of which focus on a truly personal approach, something that is often missing from the public cloud.
Changing from a virtual private server to a virtual data center can also be a solution. Alternatively, also the transition from SaaS to IaaS. There are plenty of options, it would be a shame to judge a potential effective solution based on a bad experience with a completely different service just because it shares its connection to cloud technologies.
GO TO A PRIVATE CLOUD
Then there is also the possibility to use the physical infrastructure, but make it a little special. A private cloud allows you to fully move all IT to your own physical infrastructure, while the operation is maximally efficient thanks to virtualization. You actually have public cloud capabilities on your own hardware.
USE COLLOCATION
Not every business is a Dropbox that can afford to leave AWS and build its own data center. For such cases, there is the possibility to use the data center as a service. Colocation allows you to be anchored in a data center without having to incur high investment costs for your own environment and equipment.
RETURN TO ON-PREMISE
And then there is the solution between your own data center and the colocation one – your own server or server room. A few physical machines and on what is needed. Just don’t forget to check first that it’s really the real thing.
