It is important to ask the question – in which areas should you expect cloud flexibility?
Many of us had gotten accustomed to the pleasant adaptability of applications that run in the cloud – an email mailbox, storage, music database or a movie club. But we whould also expect the same level of lexibility from solutions that ensure the operation of company IT.
If you run in the cloud, you have surely encountered the word flexibility. The question is, in which regard should you expect it. Should it stretch as a gum? Should you be able to bend it like Beckham? Even better. Your company cloud should be like a well-fitting supertux. What is a supertux? Let’s have a closer look.
Hot, Cold, Hot, Cold,…
Imagine a tux that truly fits you – that is not uncommon. but a supertux goes even further and based on the weather it will adapt the thickness of the fabric on the go and potentially even add a warm and cosy layer of Merino wool. In any situation, you have everything you need to make it through the day comfortably.
Cloud should adapt in the same manner because it will change its size based on your needs. The circumstances of your company are ever changing – your team could have gotten bigger or you could have started a new department or team. There could also be external forces such as market changes or change in customer preferences.
Let’s say that spring the the regular period for you company and in summer the rush begins. At that time, you need to enforce your infrastructure so that the system don’t go down and your customers just receive a not available sign.
Cloud does the same thing. It allows you to change the amount of resources you have at hand just like that. At any gien point in time, you have everything you need. And you also only pay for exactly that. But beware, not all cloud services are advantageous and do go by flexibility (you can read more about this in our article about cloud gluttons).
Accessorize Based on Need
Your supertux though does not only go by the current weather conditions. It also takes care of you during certain events. When you are in the office, it changes to a shirt and jacket. When it’s lunch time, it will add a tie as well. And when there is a more formal event during the night, your supertux changes to a true tuxedo with a bow tie and a nicely fitting vest. No effort and exactly when you need it.
Thanks to this approach, cloud enables you to prepare the work environment for your technicians precisely to their needs. It is not just about the resource amount changes but more importantly about the possibility to use these resources to build custom servers and edit them. IT should work dynamically and should exactly cover the circumstances and situations your company enters.
It Gets You
The supertux takes into account your preferences and needs. It selects the fabric, color and pattern so that you like yourself in it. It understands your choices and communicates with you well. The result is that you are always dressed the way you like it.
The same applies to the technicians that provide you the cloud. On one side, they should be able to speak your language- On the other, they should be the professionals that advice you when you need it. And there is also a third side – in the matter of time preceding the frist two mentioned. To successfuly run and IT infrastrucure, you need to have a good initial analysis that shows the process and the best architecture.
Maximum and Not Less
Your supertux is also always ready. You don’t happen to need a functionality that is not available because you need to purchase an add-on.
even your cloud has to provide you with a full environment – simply and clearly. Of course, some services could be add-ons but we are not talking about the basic ones. Whe you want to buy cloud, you have to have resources there (CPU, RAM, SSD, HDD), an IP address and SLA. That can be upgradable but certain basic level is a must.
It is a shame that a supertux doesn’t exist. But cloud does. Individual areas we have gone over together should be the building blocks of the company cloud infrastructure.
The foundation, however, is a thorough analysis to pick the right cloud. You can select among virtual private server, virtual data centers or multiclouds. The right choice is key not only with regards to efficiency but also costs. A bad choice goes deep into your pocket.
